Luigi Mangione— the mancharged with murderingUnitedHealthcare CEOBrian Thompson— had reportedly been dealing with “debilitating” back pain before going “radio silent” with friends over the summer.
On Monday, Dec. 9, PEOPLE confirmed that Mangione, 26, had been charged with one count of murder, two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, one count of second-degree possession of a forged document, and one count of third-degree criminal possession of a firearm.

A New York grand jury has indictedLuigi Mangioneon terrorism charges related to the Dec. 4 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
Mangione is also charged with first-degree murder, whichin New Yorkis reserved for specific acts like the murder of police officers, murder-for-hire, killing a witness, or acts of terrorism. He also faces charges for possessing weapons and forged instruments.
“We allege that Luigi Mangione carried out the brazen, targeted and fatal shooting of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson in Midtown Manhattan," said Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg in a statement issued on Dec.

Mangione’s hands were handcuffed behind his back as video shows him begin to turn to yell. One police officer held Mangione’s right arm while ushering him from a police vehicle into the courthouse, as four more officers rushed to help usher him into the building while he screamed.“It’s completely out of touch! Luigi Mangionereturned to New York in shackles on Thursday, Dec. 19, to face murder charges in the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson that could lead to the death penalty.
The accused killer had waived his right to an extradition hearing in Pennsylvania earlier in the day and was placed in custody of the New York City Police Department, who took him back to Manhattan.
