A 12-year-old boy died after he was injured in a motocross event in Georgia, authorities said.
The Crawford County Sheriff’s Office said in a post on Facebook that officials were notified on Saturday, Feb. 8, about an injured person at the Echeconnee Motocross racing track in Lizella.
The sheriff’s office identified the victim as Dalton Hill, 12, who was taking part in the event at the time.
The sheriff’s office added that the investigation is ongoing. It wasn’t immediately clear what caused Dalton to be injured.
According to its website, theEcheconnee Motocrossis considered Georgia’s oldest running dirt track,TheMaconTelegraphnoted.

AGoFundMehas been created in memory of Dalton and on behalf of Dalton’s family. It has raised over $37,000 as of Tuesday, Feb. 11.
“As [Dalton’s family] face these circumstances, please help them as they lay their son to rest,” the organizer wrote.
PEOPLE contacted the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office, Echeconnee Motocross and the GoFundMe organizer for more information on Tuesday.
Officials with Georgia Military College Prep School, where Dalton attended, offered their condolences and promised the school community that they “will be there for each other through this difficult time"in a Facebook statement.
The school’s president, Lt. General William B. Caldwell IV,also paid tributeto the 12-year-old boy.
“Dalton’s life was a gift to all who knew him,” Caldwell wrote. “His kindness, joy, and bright spirit left an undeniable mark on our institution, and he will be deeply missed.”
