Located about 65 miles north of Manchester in the Yorkshire Dales, the site is known for being Great Britain’shighest altitude pubat 1,732 feet above sea level, according to theirwebsite. On Saturday, Jan. 4, 23 guests and six staff members took shelter in the pub amid a severe snow storm,BBCreports.
There was an amber warning that heavy snow was coming on the night of Jan. 4, and the pub reportedly received word that the main road would close at 10:30 p.m. local time, according toThe Guardian.

Despite not being able to leave, guests and staff were reportedly in good spirits during the snowstorm.
“It’s like one big family here at the moment. We’ve all swapped numbers, swapped life stories, we’ve laughed, we’ve cried, it’s been amazing,” she told the outlet.

Hayes even had the opportunity to help one of the pub’s guests visiting from Australia build their very first snowman, according to apostshared to Tan Hill Inn’s official Instagram account on Monday, Jan. 6.
“As well as making my first snowman I’m getting a liking for the huge Yorkshire puddings and the Tan Hill bitter. The staff have been amazing. They are working so hard. We offered to wash the dishes but they weren’t having it,” the guest, named Paul, said of his experience, in the caption.
AnotherInstagram Reelshowed a thick layer of snow covering the grounds surrounding the Inn, as well as all the cars on the premises. Hayes told BBC that she recalled seeing “six-foot snow drifts across the main road in front of the pub” at one point.
PEOPLE received confirmation from the pub on the afternoon of Tuesday, Jan. 7, local time that the roads are still closed and six people who were originally snowed in are still there.

This is not the first time dozens of guests have been snowed in at the famous pub.
In November 2021, a reported61 people called the Tan Hill Inn home for three daysafter a storm brought in three feet of snow that approached the height of the pub’s windows. The heavy snowfall caused a power outage and roads surrounding the property to be shut down.
