The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit (VCU) conducted an investigation at the scene. They discovered that the dogs belonged to the residence, where the woman was visiting to feed the animals while their owner was out of town, police said.

VCU Capt. Jack Kennedy told PEOPLE that authorities will not release any additional information about the woman out of respect for her family. He added that no criminal charges are expected.

“I always thought of dogs as man’s best friend, but I think these were the type of dogs that were very aggressive in some way,” he said. “And it was so unfortunate and disconcerting … trying to revive the person who was not coming back.”
