Mangione, a former high school valedictorian and University of Pennsylvania computer science graduate, has been charged with one count of murder, two counts of second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, one count of second-degree possession of a forged document, and one count of third-degree criminal possession of a firearm, PEOPLE confirmed Monday, Dec. 9.

A law enforcement source told PEOPLE that police found a “manifesto” that Mangione had written railing against the healthcare industry, writing that Thompson’s killing “had to be done” and that “frankly, these parasites had it coming.”

It’s not clear if the “written admissions” referenced in Mangione’s arrest warrant are the same as the “manifesto” police obtained on him when he was taken into custody.

Mangione was arrested Monday afternoon after he was recognized at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pa., and an employee called police, ending a five-day manhunt for the suspected killer. The search began early Dec. 4 after Thompson, 50, was gunned down in front of the New York Hilton Midtown hotel in Manhattan where he and other UnitedHealthcare executives were set to gather for an investor meeting.

The killer swiftly fled the scene on a bicycle and police lost track of the suspect in Central Park, leading investigators with the New York City Police Department widening its search and sharing images and video from several security cameras throughout the city in hopes of identifying the gunman.

The law enforcement source who told PEOPLE about the alleged manifesto Mangione had on him said the suspect wrote in the three-page document: “To the Feds, I’ll keep this short, because I do respect what you do for our country. To save you a lengthy investigation, I state plainly that I wasn’t working with anyone.”

“I do apologize for any strife or traumas, but it had to be done,” Mangione allegedly continued. “Frankly, these parasites had it coming.”

Shell casings found at the scene of Thompson’s murder reportedly had the words “deny,” “defend” and “depose” on them — a possible reference to “deny, delay, defend,” a phrase used about the insurance industry to describe a strategy of rejecting claims.

Mangione had fake IDs allegedly used to book lodging at a New York City hostel last week, as well as “a semi-automatic pistol with what appears to be a 3D printed loaded receiver with a metal slide and silencer, and written admissions about the crime,” according to his arrest warrant.

Mangione, who also faces charges in Pennsylvania for carrying a weapon and showing a fake ID to a police officer, was arraigned in a courthouse near Altoona on Tuesday, according toThe Washington Post. He was denied bail and has not yet entered a plea.
