Nearly 15 years afterUgly Bettyended its run, starsMichael Urieand Becki Newton are revisiting the beloved ABC series with a new rewatch podcast,Still Ugly.

For Urie, 44, and Newton, 46, the podcast became the perfect excuse to reunite and relive theirUgly Bettydays. As Urie tells PEOPLE, “Becki and I have never stopped being really, really close. From the minute we finished the show until now, we have remained in very close contact. We see each other all the time. We text literally every day.”

“This is an idea that has been in the back of our minds for a long time,” he continues. “We’d thought about it and every time I’d see another show doing it, I get really jealous.”

Returning toUgly Bettyhas been a nostalgic experience for both of the actors. Newton explains, “I think we’re paying attention to the stories more and other characters and what they’re doing. We were so young and to look at the big picture after all these years later, it still has impacted people so much. That’s really special. And it’s very emotional.”

During the show’s run from 2006 to 2010, the cast grew very close. Newton recalls, “I think watching it again just reiterates this, that we were part of something really special.”

Urie notes that even all these years later, it felt like no time had passed. “We all fell into the same rhythms instantly when reuniting. Tony Plana [Betty’s father] still feels like ‘Papi,’ ” he shares.

Still Uglyalso provides Urie and Newton a unique platform to revisit the series through a contemporary lens, examining its enduring relevance and celebrating the show’s bold storytelling and cultural impact.

Urie describesUgly Bettyas “very rarely cringey.” While some characters have outdated remarks, Urie notes that they are always held accountable. “There are definitely things where some characters say the wrong thing. They’ll say something racist or transphobic, but they always get theirs. It’s like they’re villains and they say it and then they’re punished for saying it,” he shares.

Even so, the impact of the show remains a topic of discussion to this day.

“People talk to us about the show all the time,” Urie adds. “How much the show meant to them, whether it’s the queer representation, female empowerment or seeing a Latina woman overcoming odds. The world still needs those examples.”

WhileStill Uglyis poised to delight devoted fans, both Urie and Newton express openness to the idea of reprising their roles if a reboot were to happen. “Oh yeah. Yes,” Urie enthusiastically responds when asked about the possibility.

Newton adds, “Every time we interview anyone in our podcast, it always ends the same way. It’s like, ‘When are we doing this again? We have to do that. We have to get this cast back together.’”
