Bride 'Absolutely Fuming' After Groom's Friend Demanded He Bring a Plus-One to Wedding

A bride says everything was coming together smoothly for her upcoming wedding — until her fiancé’s friend did something that left the couple feeling “railroaded.”

The bride shared her story in a detailed post onReddit’s “Wedding Planning” forum, explaining that her wedding is set to take place in five weeks and she and her fiancé have been tending to all the final details, including sending name cards and their seating plan to the printer. While her soon-to-be husband was away celebrating his bachelor party, however, she was “notified of a developing situation” that has since left her “absolutely fuming.”

Providing some background context, the bride explained that the couple’s wedding venue package requires a cap of 70 guests. When the pair sent out their invitations, the groom’s friend Greg asked if he could bring his girlfriend, whom he had been dating for six weeks at the time. Since the couple had previously been unaware that he was dating someone, Greg had not been offered a plus-one invite.

The bride said they were forced to tell Greg that they had already finalized their guest list but would keep his girlfriend in mind should a spot open up. Then, they were taken aback when Greg later RVSPed for two meals when only he had been invited.

“My fiancé explained again that there was no room, and that I had friends from work who would be invited before the girlfriend. Apparently Greg was ‘sad but understood,’ " the bride recalled.

When the groom gathered with his close friends, including Greg, at his destination bachelor party this past weekend, Greg “spent the whole time repeatedly asking to invite his girlfriend.”

After the bride’s fiancé texted her about the situation, she “sarcastically” said Greg’s girlfriend could come to the wedding if he “paid $250 for an additional head.”

“To our surprise, Greg agrees and transfers the money on the spot, but still doesn’t tell fiancé her full name so I can add to the guest list like it’s a fun joke,” the bride recounted.

The bride added: “I still haven’t printed off my stationery because I am so annoyed this friend railroaded us and I want my fiancé to return Greg’s money and put his foot down that the girlfriend can’t come.”

Others blamed the bride’s fiancé for not being firm with his friend when Greg kept asking about bringing his girlfriend.

Still others tried to give Greg the benefit of the doubt and consider the situation from his point of view.

“I think a lot of people who aren’t yet married/haven’t been involved in planning a wedding really don’t understand the annoyance of plus ones/guest lists,” a commenter suggested. “To me, it seems Greg thought it was no big deal just to add a person and didn’t know how it might be. He also probably thinks it’s just a fun party and he wants to bring his girlfriend.”

Quite a few commenters urged the bride to simply let it go at this point and not allow the incident to spoil her big day.

“Look, what’s done is done — you can’t change it,” someone argued. “Yeah, Greg definitely overstepped, but here’s some real talk: You’ve got way bigger things to save your energy for than a friend’s girlfriend. This is small-time drama, and you’ve got a whole wedding coming up, one of the biggest days of your life. Keep your cool, stay in your happy bubble and don’t let this nonsense take up space in your head.”
