The movie will be released as Burns' directorial debut, 1995’sThe Brothers McMullen, is approaching its 30th anniversary.

Burns, 56, reflects, “When I was coming up as a filmmaker in the mid ’90s there were endless movies about Gen-Xers and our threshold experiences.”

“But as I hit my mid ’50s, I noticed there are no films about the day-to-day experiences and struggles of our mid-life,” he adds.

WithMillers in Marriage, Burns continues, he “wanted to chronicle the thorny emotional lives of three siblings adrift in middle age, as they survey the challenges of long-term love while exploring the possibilities for personal change.”

“I was blessed to secure this incredible ensemble, many of whom came of age as actors in the ’90s and mined their own experiences as they tapped into their respective roles,” he adds.

The filmmaker recently told PEOPLE about his debut novelA Kid from Marlboro Road, which, while fictional, draws heavily on Burns' own family background.

The story follows a 12-year-old narrator who’s at his beloved grandfather’s wake, looking around at the over-full room. He doesn’t yet realize how much his family and his community impact who he is or who he’ll become.

“There’s freedom in fiction,” Burns said at the time. “The book allows me to really get inside this kid’s head, in a way a movie just can’t do. And you don’t have to worry about the budget either.”

Millers in Marriageis in theaters and on digital Feb. 21.
