Road trips don’t get much worse than the oneEva Longoriaand her costars experience in their new movie.

Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Road Tripstars Longoria, 49, as the matriarch of a family on a mission to reconnect with their Mexican roots.

“I have a crazy Mexican family and had so much fun going on road trips growing up,” Longoria tells PEOPLE. “It was fun putting a family that looks like mine on screen and at the same time have it be so relatable to everybody.”

The followup to 2014’sAlexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day— which wasadaptedfrom Judith Viorst’s novel of the same name and starred Steve Carell and Jennifer Garner — is “a film for the whole family,” says Longoria.

“It has adventure, it has a cursed idol, and there’s a road trip! It hits on all levers," she says.

The actress-producer is equally effusive about her costars. Playing other members of the Garcia family are Jesse Garcia, Paulina Chávez, Rose Portillo andCheech Marin.

“Reuniting with Jesse Garcia was fun because I directed him inFlamin’ Hotand this time I got to act with him,” Longoria says. “I’ve also directed Paulina Chávez, who is from San Antonio like me.”

The movie also featuresHarvey Guillén, Cristo Fernández and Angela Wilson. Together withGentefieddirector Lemus, whom Longoria has “always dreamed of working with,” she says, “It felt like a family reunion.”

Among the film’s first-look images are glimpses of the beleaguered Garcias standing on the side of the road and seeking help from Guillén’s character Claudio. In another, Portillo’s character questions Marin’s in the desert while he sits astride an impressive motorcycle.
