Heathers: The MusicalIs Returning to New York City This Summer — All the Details

Heathers: The Musicalis officially bringing big fun back to New York City.

More than a decade after its Off-Broadway debut, the hit show, based on the 1989movie of the same name, will return to its home campus atNew World Stagesin the Big Apple. The musical is set to open on June 22 for a limited engagement through Sept. 28, according to an official press release. Casting details have yet to be announced.

A post on the production’s officialInstagram accountannouncedHeathers: The Musical’s N.Y.C. kickoff date on Monday, Feb. 24, alongside a graphic of the Statue of Liberty boasting several popular props from the show: Corn Nuts, a Slurpee and even a red scrunchie around her wrist.

“Welcome to Westerberg High, where popularity is a matter of life and death, and Veronica Sawyer is just another nobody dreaming of a better day,” reads an official synopsis. “But when she’s unexpectedly taken under the wings of The Heathers — three beautiful and impossibly cruel classmates all named Heather — her dreams of popularity finally start to come true.”

“That is until J.D. turns up, the mysterious teen rebel who teaches her that it might kill to be a nobody, but it is murder being a somebody,” the synopsis adds.

AfterHeathers: The Musicalwrapped Off-Broadway, it went on to enjoy multiple West End and Off-West End runs in London beginning in 2018, kicking off with Carrie Hope Fletcher as Veronica and Jamie Muscato as J.D.

The show was even the focus of a season 3 episode ofRiverdale. Over its run, The CW series' musical installments also leveragedNext to Normal,Hedwig and the Angry InchandCarrie:The Musical.

Ahead of the musical’sstreaming debut on The Roku Channelback in September 2022, directorAndy Fickmanteased to PEOPLE that its return to the U.S. in a live capacity was “on our to-do list.”

“I would love to seeHeathersget out, from our professional side, and see the world,” said Fickman, 54, at the time. “And no director of musicals doesn’t dream of someday how wonderful it would be to get back to New York again. So all of that, I think, is on the wish-list table for us.”
