Jason Priestley Says Fame Got 'Real’ for His Kids When Teachers Said They Had Posters of Him on Their Wall (Exclusive)

Jason Priestleymight be used to his level of fame, but it took his kids a little while longer to adjust.

The actor, 55, spoke with PEOPLE ahead of the season 2 premiere of his showWild Cardsand shared that hisdaughter Ava, 17, and son Dashiell, 15, only discovered how famous he truly is when something came up at their school.

“I think the time it got really real for my kids was when their teachers at school, when they were in lower school and middle school, when they found out I was their dad, the teachers would say, ‘I used to have a poster of your dad on my wall when I was a kid,’ " Priestley recalls.

“It’s pretty funny,” he continues, adding that his kids' initial reaction was more of, “‘Why would you have a poster of my dad on your wall? That’s weird.’ "

Although his kids didn’t totally understand that their dad was a star when they were younger, they are now well aware that he’s been in some big projects.

“Do your kids know or watch90210?” Ripa asked.

“Uh, yes. They know about it,” Priestley shared. “My daughter for a while wanted to watch episodes of the show but only wanted to watch them with me so she could make fun of me. My flip phone, my mom jeans — all the stuff. She thought it was hilarious.”

“Right, everything old is new again. But I, not really, because I kind of look like Brandon’s dad now,” the actor, who played Brandon Walsh on the series, quipped.

In September 2023, the actor shared a photo of his daughter on his Instagram after she was asked out to the homecoming dance. In the picture, Ava stood just under a sign that read, “Homecoming? Must be at least this tall to say no.”

“Looks like my daughter@ava.priestleyis going to Homecoming! #sorry #sorryhoney #homecomming,” the proud dad wrote in his caption.
