“Join me this Christmas Eve for a special carol service to celebrate all those who have shown love, empathy and kindness in their communities this year,” Princess Kate, 42, says in the video.

It closes with a photo of the Wales family standing together, holding programs and candles, from front-row seats during the service, where Princess Kate shares a sweet look with Prince Louis.

Last week, Kate’s fourth annualTogether at Christmasservice welcomed 1,600 guests (including members fromboth sidesof her family) to Westminster Abbey. The service was held with a poignant theme oflove and empathyamid the year that Princess Kate announced she was undergoingtreatment for cancer. The Princess of Wales shared in September that shecompleted chemotherapy, and the concert was her most major appearance since.

“I know how hard it would be to do something like this, putting yourself out there when you may not be feeling 100 percent,” Jenny Powell, a community worker from Abergavenny, Wales, who wasamong the guests, tells PEOPLE inthis week’s issue.

But Princess Kate’s nearly yearlong experience has reframed her focus to her life and role. In aremarkably candid commentto pop star Faith behind the scenes, the Princess of Wales admitted, “I didn’t know this year was going to be the year that I’ve just had.”

Friends and sources emphasize that the princess' experience has changed her perspective forever.
