Before she was the self-anointed “Mrs. Maisel of Appalachia,”Leanne Morganwas busy raising her three children: Charlie, Maggie and Tess.
The comedian shares her son and daughters with her husband of over 30 years,Chuck Morgan. While her stand-up career didn’t take off until she was in her 50s and her kids were all grown up, she got her start as a young mom selling jewelry at house parties.
At the events, she would spend less time selling and more time telling jokes, developing something of a comedy routine centered around her everyday life. “Raising babies was my main thing,” Leanne told PEOPLE in August 2023, describing exchanges in which she joked about everything from hemorrhoids to nighttime breastfeeding.
“I would go [perform stand-up] on the weekends and just work around [my husband’s] schedule and the kids’ schedules. I came in third, but that was okay,” she toldTravelgirlin May 2024. “I never felt that I didn’t get to do my own thing because I always wanted my family to be my first priority.”
Now, the proud mom-of-three — and grandmother of two — is making a splash in comedy. She hassigned a deal with Netflixfor two more stand-up specials and a scripted sitcom. In the meantime, she’s starring alongsideReese Witherspoonin Prime Video’s rom-com,You’re Cordially Invited, which premiered on Jan. 30.

Leanne and Chuck welcomed their only son, Charlie Morgan, on Aug. 19, 1993. They named him Charlie after his father, Chuck, as well as his grandfather, Charles.
Although Leanne had dreamed of a career in Hollywood since she was a child, once Charlie was born, motherhood immediately took precedence.
“Seeing my son for the first time was supernatural,” she wrote in her 2024 book,What in the World?! A Southern Woman’s Guide to Laughing at Life’s Unexpected Curveballs and Beautiful Blessings.
At the time, Leanne — who graduated from the University of Tennessee with a degree in child and family studies crisis intervention counseling, and had considered becoming a therapist — was working for her husband, Chuck, who owned a mobile home business. After having Charlie, though, she focused all her attention on him.
“I didn’t want to go to work full time and leave Charlie, but I wanted a side hustle to make a little money,” she explained toGarden & Gun Magazinein the February/March 2024 issue.
She started selling jewelry at home parties a few nights a week, where she honed her comedy skills and eventually started to pursue a career as a stand-up.

Over the years, Leanne has spoken abouttheir close connectionand shared plenty of stories about her son during her comedy routines.
She once jokedabout him being an “old soul” on stage, saying, “He was born an 80-year-old man.” The comedian explained that Charlie enjoys gardening, playing the banjo and doing woodwork.
Charlie played football in high school and then studied at Berry College in Georgia. According tohis LinkedIn, he graduated in 2016 with a bachelor’s degree in history.
Charlie now works alongside his father as a senior training specialist at Clayton Homes. In addition, he’s also a paid media coordinator andfreelance writer.
While at Berry College, Charlie met his future wife and college sweetheart, Mary, as a freshman.
Leanne has quipped about the difficulties of losing her son to another woman during her stand-up. “I want to keep him forever and have him live in the basement and be a weirdo,”she jokedduring one routine.
Charlie and Mary got married in September 2016. They live in Knoxville, Tenn. and share two sons.

Leanne and Chuck welcomed their daughter, Maggie Morgan, on April 3, 1996.
While Maggie tends to stay out of the spotlight, she sat down to interview her mom for an October 2024 episode ofNever Before Told.
“This is my middle child, my cheerleader,” Leanne said while introducing her. “She’s been a mama to me, a daughter, a best friend and I asked her to do this today because, well, she’s so smart."
During their conversation, Maggie joked about being “in the shadows” as the middle child, although she admitted that she tends to prefer it that way.

“It’s good. I’m the glue, and I hold everyone together,” she noted.
According toher LinkedIn, Maggie graduated from the University of Tennessee in 2018 with a degree in communication and media studies.
She is now a major gifts officer at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital and previously held a position at East Tennessee’s Make-A-Wish Foundation.
“My family is incredibly involved with East Tennessee Children’s Hospital and childhood illnesses,” Leanne told Travelgirl. “My daughter Maggie works in development and raises money for the hospital.”

Leanne and Chuck’s youngest child, Tess Lucille Morgan, was born on Jan. 20, 1998.
Tess tried several different majors, but none felt right to her, so she decided to take a year off. However, during her time away from the classroom, she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer.
“It made me really think, you know, life can do anything. Anything can happen in life, and I thought, ‘Why am I doing something that I hate?’ ” she recalled.
With that, Tess opted not to return to school, a decision that Leanne and Chuck understood.
“I cried about it and I finally sat down with my parents, and I was like, ‘I just don’t think this is for me. I think I need to go another route.’ And my parents were unbelievably supportive,” Tess said.

In January 2020, Leanne shared more about her youngest child’s journey with cancer in aFacebook postcelebrating Tess’s birthday.
“She was diagnosed with Thyroid cancer last summer and finished her treatment plan in October. She is cancer free and we are so unbelievably thankful,” Leanne wrote.
She continued, “No matter what the severity is, there is no feeling like finding out your child is sick. She moved to New York and is thriving. We are all so proud. Her 22nd year will be the best one yet.”
After her recovery, Tess decided to follow her dreams and relocated to the Big Apple to attend the cosmetology schoolMake-up Designory.
Tess now works as a professional makeup artist and has styled her mom several times.
Currently, she’s joining Leanne in Los Angeles as she works on her upcoming self-titled Netflix sitcom, Tess said on theWhat I Know So Farpodcast. While Leanne steps in front of the camera, Tess is the makeup artist on set.
