Morgan Freeman Honors Gene Hackman as He Introduces Oscars In Memoriam

Morgan Freemanshared a heartfelt tribute to late friend and fellow actor Gene Hackman, who was found dead in his home this week, during the 2025 Academy Awards.

On March 2, Freeman recounted to the Oscars audience that “our community lost a giant and I lost a dear friend.”

“I had the pleasure of working alongside Gene on two films,” said Freeman. “Like anyone who ever shared a scene with him, I learned he was a generous performer and a man whose gifts elevated everyone’s work. … He received two Oscars but more importantly, he won the hearts of film lovers all over the world.”

Notable absences from Sunday’s tribute included the late Shannen Doherty and Michelle Trachtenberg, who died this past week.

Los Angeles Firefighters Tell Jokes Onstage During the Oscars Ceremony

Los Angeles firefighters were honored, once again, this awards season in the wake of the devastating wildfires that destroyed much of the area in January.

Then, O’Brien asked the firefighters to tell a few jokes, and commanded the celebrities in attendance: “Everyone in this audience has to laugh, these are heroes.”

First up was LAFD Captain Erick Scott, who teased, “Our hearts go out to all of those who have lost their homes, and I’m talking about the producers ofJoker 2.”

Conan O’Brien pulled no punches during his 2025 Oscars opening monologue, after he was announced as a “four-time Oscars viewer.”

First, O’Brien joked about each of the Best Picture nominees, lightly ribbing each film. Said O’Brien, “I’m a catholic boy, lovedConclave … If you haven’t seenConclave, it’s log line is a movie about the Catholic church but don’t worry.”

O’Brien continued, addressing Gascón, “If you are going to tweet about the Oscars, remember my name is Jimmy Kimmel.”

The comedian then went over the rules for the evening, which included keeping speeches within the time limit. If winners do not, O’Brien said, the camera will cut to John Lithgow in the audience looking “slightly disappointed.” If even then, the nominees still won’t get off the stage, “I’m gonna show once of your old head shots,” O’Brien threatened.
