Starbucksis cutting nearly a third of its menu.During the coffee chain’s earnings call on Tuesday, Jan. 28, CEO Brian Niccol announced a “roughly 30% reduction in both beverages and food." However, the chain has yet to announce which items are getting cut.
“We have to clear the noise out both in food and beverage menus,” the executive said in a statement shared with PEOPLE. “That opens the door for better innovation that will hopefully resonate even more so for our customers.“Niccol added in a Q1 FY2025 Earnings Video: “We’ve taken steps to refocus the business, our mission and our marketing to better align with our identity as a coffee company.”

“It’s the fundamental change we need to stabilize the business and return to growth,” Niccol says of the company’s strategy. “To date, we’ve seen a positive response.”
On the earnings call, the company revealed a 4% global store sales decline in the first quarter. However, Starbucks opened 377 new locations in the same period.
“While we have room for improvement, we’re making progress as planned, and have confidence we’re on the right track,” the CEO adds.

The news follows Starbucks’ announcement on Monday thatfree refills are back. Customers who choose to enjoy their order in-store will receive beverages in ceramic mugs, glasses or clean personal cups from home, and can also bring their cups back for another round on Starbucks, with a free refill of hot or iced brewed coffee or tea.
On Jan. 27, the company also brought back some condiment bar classics like creamer, milk and sweeteners.

The brand also madeheadlinesearlier this month for requiring customers to make a purchase and follow a new code of conduct to be able to use the store’s bathrooms.

The code of conduct changes also bans alcohol, smoking and vaping in Starbucks locations. Employees are instructed to ask anyone refusing the new policy to leave. If necessary, they should call the police.
