TheHome Alonehouse is officially off the market!

The famous setting of the beloved 1990 Christmas classic, located in Winnetka, Ill., has officially sold over the asking price for $5.5 million, PEOPLE can confirm.

The five-bedroom, six-bathroom abodefirst hit the market with an asking price of $5.25 millionin May 2024, and went under contract shortly after it was listed.

Listing agents Dawn McKenna and Katie Moor ofColdwell Banker Realtylater confirmed to PEOPLE that the sale was pending in December 2024. News of the listing made national headlines and led to a pending offer after less than a week on the market.

Culkin, 44, previously admitted that even he had"half a mind to buy [the home], just for giggles"while speaking at a screening of the film in December 2024. While he never planned to move in himself, he considered turning the home into a “movie fun house” where fans could reenact scenes from the movie.

McKenna previously told PEOPLE that the property — which has a fully equipped gym, state-of-the-art movie theater, an indoor sports court featuring a 3-point line, and a three-car attached heated garage — is a “rare legend that lives up to its hype in every way.”

“This home has it all. It’s iconic, loaded with modern amenities, and in one of the best neighborhoods in the country,” she says.

The nostalgic property previously belonged to Tim and Trisha Johnson, who purchased it in 2012 for $1.585 million, according toMansion Global.

Speaking about some of their favorite memories there, Trisha told the outlet, “Sometimes we’ll hear the Kevin scream [from outside]. It’s a lot of fun to see people as excited as they are just to see my house.”

Another former resident, Laura Abendshien, lived in the house while the movie was filming and shared her one-of-a-kind experience on theU.K. morning showThis Morning.

“We stayed in the house pretty much the entire period, which was about four or five months,” she said. “In order to avoid appearing onscreen, we would have to crawl around the window line from room to room.”

She also recalled how the cast, including Culkin, would hang out around the home in-between scenes.

“They would spend time in the house when they weren’t filming their scenes. Macaulay Culkin used my room to study with his tutor, and his brother [Keiran], wasn’t filming as much, so he would just hang out in my room,” she remembered.

“We saw something special was happening, but we didn’t anticipate how much of a hit it would be,” she said of the reception to the family comedy, which spawned two sequels.

“It was very surreal when the movie came out and all of a sudden it’s holiday season in 1990 and it was an endless row of cars and people wanted to see the house and take photographs and that was very new to us, but we grew to love it and we shared the magic of the movie.”

Originally built in 1921, the 9,126 sq. ft. property lies behind a wrought-iron gate on a tree-lined street.

After a 2018 renovation, the home now features a family room with high ceilings and French doors that open to the backyard. There’s also a chef’s kitchen, a second family room, a screened-in porch with a wood-burning fireplace.The space is ready for a family the size of the McCallisters', thanks to two upstairs and downstairs laundry rooms and a mudroom.

The second floor has a primary suite with a gas fireplace, a walk-in closet, and a marble-clad bath, while the third floor was converted from the old attic into a junior primary suite.
