Now, 60 years after singing “So Long, Farewell” together in 1965, the cast have moved on to other iconic roles and have grown their own families.

From winning Oscars to starring in sci-fi series, here’s where the cast ofThe Sound of Musicare now.

Andrews starred as Maria, the precocious and inspirational governess who helps the von Trapp kids learn to embrace music and family — and later becomes their stepmother.

After Andrews earned her Oscar nominationfor playing Maria, she continued having hit roles in movies likeThoroughly Modern Millie(1967) andVictor/Victoria(1982), the latter of which earned her another Oscar nomination for Best Actress.

These days Andrews is best known for her iconic roles as the queen in bothThe Princess DiariesandShrekfranchises. She also served as the voice for Lady Whistledown inBridgertonand its spinoffQueen Charlottefrom 2020 to 2024. Next up, fans might see Andrews reprise her role inThe Princess Diariessince it was announced thata third film is in the works.

Off-screen, she was married toBreakfast at Tiffany’sdirector Blake Edwards from 1969 until his death in 2010. Andrews also has three daughters: Emma, Amy and Joanna.

Christopher Plummer as Captain von Trapp

Plummer played the von Trapp’s rigid patriarch. AfterThe Sound of Music, he went on to have a long career both on Broadway and in Hollywood.

Plummer won Tony awards for his performances in the showsCyrano(1974) andBarrymore(1997), and he earned three Oscar nominations — two for his roles inThe Last Station(2009) andAll the Money in the World(2017), and one forBeginners(2011), which he won.

Plummer died at age 91in 2021. After his death, Andrews toldthePA News,per BBC, “I treasure the memories of our work together and all the humour and fun we shared through the years.”

The actor was previously married to actress Tammy Grimes, with whom he shared a daughter, actress Amanda Plummer. From 1970 until his death, Plummer was married to actress Elaine Taylor.

Eleanor Parker played Baroness Schreader, the new woman whom Captain von Trapp intends to marry.

Before starring inThe Sound of Music, Parker had already earned three Oscar nominations for her roles inCaged(1951),Detective Story(1952) andInterrupted Melody(1958).

AfterThe Sound of Music, Parker transitioned mainly into television, earning a Golden Globe nomination for the seriesBracken’s World(1970) and later holding guest spots in a wide variety of shows likeHawaii Five-O(1978) andMurder, She Wrote(1986).

Parker was married four times during her life and had four children. The actress died in 2013 at age 91.

Charmian Carr played the von Trapp’s oldest daughter Liesel, who is in love with Rolf, a young man who later becomes a Nazi soldier.

The Sound of Musicis actually one of Carr’s only acting credits. After the film, she appeared in one episode ofABC Stage 67(1966) and then left acting behind to become an interior designer. Over the years, Carr wrote two books,Forever LieslandLetters to Liesl, about her experience on the iconic movie set and appeared in 2010 with her costars to commemorateThe Sound of Music’s 45th anniversary.

The actress evenrecorded the song “Edelweiss"with the great-grandchildren of the von Trapps in 2014.

While growing her interior design business, Carr also grew her own family withher husband Jay Brent. The couple, who later divorced, had two daughters, Jennifer and Emily.

Carrdied in 2016 at age 73. Her loved ones announced her passing on her website and wrote that she decided to leave show business behind “to focus on her two daughters.”

Nicholas Hammond starred as Friedrich von Trapp, the oldest son of the von Trapp kids who tells Maria he’s “impossible.”

After that, Hammond held roles in other projects like the 2004 miniseries adaptation ofSalem’s LotandOnce Upon a Time in Hollywood(2019), in which he portrayed actor Sam Wanamaker. The lifelong actor isn’t done working on his craft, either. In early 2025, Hammond starred in the dramedy seriesGood Cop/Bad Cop.

Duane Chase portrayed the youngest singing brother, Kurt von Trapp.

Chase has stayed out of the spotlight since starring inThe Sound of Music, recording only two additional acting credits after the iconic movie. He toldThe Tuscaloosa Newsin 1981 that he quickly “became too old for young parts and too young for old parts.”

The former child actor graduated from high school in 1969 and worked for the forest service in California. Chase then studied geology at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and continued his education and work in the same field.

The geologist toldParadein 2013 that his interest in rocks was sparked while on location in Austria filmingThe Sound of Music. He said he often went off to explore the set’s surroundings even when he wasn’t supposed to.

As of 2013, Chase wasmarried to a woman named Petra.

Angela Cartwright played Brigitta von Trapp inThe Sound of the Music.

After the iconic movie, she continued landing lead roles, starring in the sci-fi seriesLost in Space(1965-1968) and the 1979Poseidon Adventuresequel,Beyond the Poseidon Adventure. Cartwright has since held cameos in both the 1998Lost in Spacemovie and the 2018 series reboot. She also starteda career in photography.

Cartwright married actor Steve Gullion in 1976 and their children Becca Gullion and Jesse Gullion have followed their footsteps into Hollywood. She is also the sister of horror icon Veronica Cartwright, who is best known for starring inAlienandThe Witches of Eastwick.

Debbie Turner played the second-youngest von Trapp sister, Marta.

The Sound of Musicwas her only major acting credit and she now runs a floral and wedding design company calledDebbie Turner Originals. She also sells some memorabilia from the film.

As of 1989, Turner wasmarried to Rick Larson, with whom she shared three daughters, Brooke, Amy and Angela.

AfterThe Sound of Music, Kym Karath held dozens of guest spots on popular series, appearing in episodes of shows likeLost in Space(1966),The Brady Bunch(1972) andArchie Bunker’s Place(1980).

Karath also graduated from the University of Southern California and lived in Paris for a while, working as a model. In more recent years, she’s become an advocate for kids with disabilities because of her experience caring for her son.

“My son has special needs, so I was needed in a way I never expected to be needed,” Karath toldParadein 2013. “You just rise to the occasion.”
