Rhythm + Flowgives 22 up-and-coming rappers a chance to take home $250,000 — and gain worldwide recognition for their talent.
Season 2 judgesLudacris,DJ Khaledand Latto put contestants through group challenges, battles and live performances to find the next big personality in rap music. Every decision to cut or move an artist to the next round had to be unanimous, including weigh-ins from all-star guest judges likeEminem,Remy Ma,Big Seanand Busta Rhymes.
“If I hear a rapper doing compound syllables, I immediately know, okay, this is a technician, and they know what they’re doing,” Eminem said during the episode he judged. “And then there’s stage presence and delivery. And if someone has that, all of it, they’re going to win.”
After nine episodes, only four rappers made it to the finale: Detroit Diamond, Jay Taj, Sura Ali and DreTL.Rhythm + Flowexecutive producer Dionne Harmon toldTudumin November 2024 that the final four could not be put into boxes.
“What I love so much about our finalists is that everyone is so completely different,” she said. “They just lean into, ‘This is who I am. Take it or leave it.’ ”

Atlanta-based rapper DreTL won season 2 ofRhythm + Flowand took home the $250,000 prize. In a December 2024 interview withTudum, he said that his biggest moment on the show wasn’t winning but rather performing in front of his idol, Eminem.
“Once I was able to perform in front of him, I felt like I was going to win, because nothing was tougher than that,” DreTL said. “This is the Eminem, and if I could do this right there in front of him, I can do anything in the world. I can fly.”
Ludacris told Tudum that it was the rapper’s heart and continued improvement that really won the judges over: “You know how in school there’s that kid that just does well and does everything good, and then you have that kid that is the most improved? For me, that’s what did it.”
When asked about his post-Rhythm + Flowplans, DreTL told Tudum that he’s not after big awards or chart-topping hits.
“I just want to continue to create genuine, good art,” the rapper said. “I got a little money now and I can really be set up to do what I love to do. As long as I’m able to do that, I’ll be happy — and for whoever listens, I’m glad that I’ll be able to connect with people in that way.”
After the finale was released on Netflix on Dec. 4, DreTL posted an image of himself onInstagram, set to an original, untitled song. In the caption, he wrote that he loves “being the underdog.”
Georgia University State Newsreported that he’ll graduate from the university in December 2024 with his bachelor’s degree in music industry — the first in his family to do so.
“Most importantly, I hold dear the education I received here — something that no one can ever take away from me," DreTL told his school news site. “As a first-generation college graduate, this moment is even more meaningful and I’m proud to be a positive example for the next generation.”
The rapper released his single fromRhythm + Flow, “High Definition,” in December after releasing two original songs in November, “Like I Never Left” and “Don’t Call It A Comeback.”

“I told him, ‘as long as it’s us two as the last two, then we won, bro,’ ” he said. “I think that we see something in each other … I know that there is a vast difference in the way that we present our art to the world. But the thing that is the same is: I give Jay to the world. Dre gives Dre to the world. And this is one and the same with every great artist that’s ever lived.”
The Los Angeles-based rapper even featured DreTL on a song in his November 2024 EPLITTLE JERRY DEMOS. Taj also released his single from the show, “Believe Me,” in December. In addition to sharing his music, he also posts photos of his pitbull-lab mix Syrus, who hashis own Instagramaccount.

The New York-based rapper toldBossipin December 2024 that after the show, she was hospitalized for five days and had to get two blood transfusions.
“It’s not that serious when you hear about it, but when you’re dealing with it and not getting enough oxygen to your organs and you are fatigued all the time and you are hungry all the time … I didn’t know what was going on," Ali said. “All I just knew is they kept saying, ‘You want to go to urgent care?' I’m like, ‘Nah because I have to finish.’ ”
