Who Are Dan and Shay's Wives? All About Abby Smyers and Hannah Mooney

“We write all these songs and we’re inspired because we have incredible wives, and we get to write songs and write about what we know, and we’re both married and we know what it’s like to love,” Shay told Zane Lowe onApple Music 1in 2022.

She met Dan in Nashville, Tennessee, in 2013, andthe pair got engagedon Waikiki Beach in Hawaii on Nov. 18, 2016.

The couple doesn’t have children but are proud pet parents to four dogs: Joy, Ghost, Chief, and Macaroni. The first three were a part of their wedding party, with Dan joking to PEOPLE that the pups were “the most important bridesmaid and groomsmen.”

Rescue dogs are still important to the pair, who volunteer and foster through theProverbs 12:10 Animal Rescuein Tennessee. The duo also sponsored a part of the Wags & Walks Rescue Nashville adoption center that opened in July 2023.

When Dan + Shay went through a rough patch, they leaned on their wives, and keep doing so.

“She’s helped me through dark times when I was sad,” he explained. “Who knows? I may have quit music or moved back to my hometown, but she’ll just talk me off the ledge and calm me down.”

“The first thing my wife and I did on our anniversary was watch that video and we were both speechless. We ended up watching our entire wedding video later in the day,” Dan told PEOPLE in 2018.

Shay told PEOPLE it was love at first sight when he met Hannah (née Billingsley), a former Miss Arkansas and current host of the podcastUnexpected with Hannah Love.

The two had been texting on and off for a few years, but in March 2015, Hannah directly asked Shay if his band was ever coming to Arkansas. It turned out Dan + Shay were going to be in her town, Fayetteville, four days later, and the two officially met at George’s Majestic Lounge on March 11, according toArkansas Bride, That night, Shay asked Hannah if she would be his date to the Academy of Country Music Awards.

“Shay is everything I never knew I needed,” Hannah told the outlet. “I truly never imagined being with a man in the music industry, so it took me some time to come around.”

After about a year and a half of dating, Shay and Hannah got engaged in Arkansas on Aug. 9, 2016. The couple had asecret weddingthat night — which was a surprise to Hannah. Shay popped the question as his hit song, “From the Ground Up,” played on the radio, and the two drove to a stone chapel, where he had brought their family and friends together for the impromptu event. They kept news of the small ceremony private for a few years.

“From the very first time I saw her,I knew I wanted to marry her,” Mooney told PEOPLE, adding, “She’s the best thing that’s ever happened to me, so I had to lock it down. She’s my better — and much better-looking — half.”

Shortly after, the couple announced they were expecting their first child together.Their son, Asher James, was born on Jan. 24, 2017.

Hannah and Shay have a large brood of boys.

Dan + Shay nearly broke up back in 2021, goingwithout speaking for four monthsafter completingtheir arena tour that year. They’ve since reconciled, and we have their wives to thank for helping the musical duo stay afloat.

Shay,who is recently sober, shared a similar sentiment about his wife, saying, “She is an absolute angel, my wife. She was my lifeline through all of this. It’s not an easy thing to kind of sit back and watch the person that you love destroy themselves with what they eat and with drinking too much.”

The country duo, who’vebeen together for 12 years,rebuilt their relationship from scratch. Shay told people that he and Dan “redefined what we think success is,” which has meant focusing on the most important people in their lives — each other and their respective families — and Dan feels the same way.

“Our relationships at home are in such a great place because of the work we’ve done personally, individually, and I think it all trickles down,” Dan said.

They are red carpet regulars

The two couples often pose together at big-name events, including the 57th AnnualCMA Awardsin November 2023, the CMT Music Awards in June 2019 and the 61st Annual Grammy Awards in February 2019, amongst many others.

Their first red carpet double-date night happened in 2016 at the 51st Academy of Country Music Awards in Las Vegas.

Though the Smyerses and Mooneys have fun attending major Hollywood occasions, it’s the time spent at home that they enjoy the most.

“Our favorite thing to do during the holiday season is justbe home with our families,” Dan told PEOPLE in 2022. “Our schedules are so busy, we’re touring nonstop pretty much the whole year round — sothe holiday seasonis a good time for us to slow down, to reflect.”
