Before meeting his wife, model and actress Ru Kumagai,Daniel Henneysaid that heartbreak had turned him off of love forever.

Off-screen, Henney spoke about love during a 2024 episode of JTBC’sActors’ Association. “A long time ago, I was in a relationship. We broke up,” he said. “You know how you feel when you break up with someone, you think, ‘I’m finished! I’m never dating another woman! I’m done!’ ”

But then theBig Hero 6star met Kumagai and had a change of heart. After denying dating rumors in 2018, when the pair were just friends, Henney and Kumagai ultimately married in October 2023.

“My wife, Ru, is wonderful, she’s my life partner. She is much more my better half than me,” the actor said onThe May Lee Showin 2024. “She’s been the greatest thing that’s happened to me.”

She’s an actress

Kumagai has been an actress for almost as long as Henney. While he had his breakout role in 2005, she started out her career as Rosie Naganuma in the war dramaOnly the Bravethe following year.

The actress has also appeared on9-1-1,Ryan Hansen Solves Crimesand in a guest role onGood Trouble. Kumagai voiced the English version of the character Lee Na Yeon in the Korean seriesAll of Us Are Deadin 2022.

She also produced and starred in the action-comedy shortHappy Martin 2023. Off-screen, Kumagai is involved in martial arts and holds a1st Degree Black Belt in Taekwondo.

They were initially tight-lipped about their romance

Five years before their wedding, in 2018, Henney and Kumagai denied romance rumors.

His agency Echo Global Group issueda statementthat read, “After checking with him, we are letting you know that they are actor colleagues that met at a friendly gathering … It is not true that they are dating.”

Henney said onThe May Lee Showin 2024 that he was interested in Kumagai at the time but they were not yet dating. He also added that because of the media attention, Kumagai “stepped away” from a potential relationship and felt overwhelmed.

In Henney’s interview with JTBC’sActors’ Association, he opened up about how he met Kumagai, and how their love began.

“I went to this restaurant. And she was the hostess," he said. “Then we just started talking. And she was really sweet. And so I liked her. And I kept going to the restaurant.”

Their love blossomed over books

To build their connection, Henney talked with Kumagai about books on his many visits to the restaurant where she worked.

He said onActors' Association, “She was always reading. And my favorite author isHaruki Murakami. So I asked her, ‘Do you know Murakami?’ and she went, ‘No.’ " Henney then bought Kumagai all of Murakami’s books as a present.

Over time, their friendship turned romantic and the pair began dating. “Ten years ago, I didn’t know if I would ever get married. But, I’m so happy now,” Henney concluded.

They married in October 2023

Henney and Kumagai married in an intimate ceremony in October 2023.

On the 20th, Henney’s agency, Echo Global Group, issueda statementannouncing the couple’s marriage.

“Daniel Henney has met someone whom he wants to spend the rest of his life with, and so he has decided to bear the fruit of those emotions through marriage,” the statement read. “Very recently, they held a quiet, private wedding ceremony with their families present.”

The newlyweds honeymooned in Paris

Although Henney and Kumagai are private about their relationship, they occasionally share about each other on Instagram.

In a rare glimpse, Henney posted a sunlit photo of Kumagai onInstagramin 2024, with the caption, “Happy birthday my ❤️.”

Kumagai has shared videos ofher honeymoon with Henney in Paris, includingsunset snuggleswith her new husband andan outfit postin which the two kissed.

During his interview withActors’ Association, Henney said, “Our best days are like, on a Sunday. We watch a movie, get a pizza, and just lie on the couch together. That’s the best.”

Henney and Kumagai share a love of dogs

Henney and Kumagai have both shared numerous posts about their dogs on social media.

Combining her love for dogs and books, Kumagaivolunteersfor Bark Therapy Dogs, a nonprofit that pairs children with dogs to encourage them to read.

One year after their wedding, in their first joint post onInstagram, the couple shared that their dog Roscoe had died.
