Woman and Fiancé Found Dead in Separate Rooms in Villa in Vietnam: Reports

A British woman and her South African fiancé were found dead last week at a villa in Vietnam, though it remains unclear why, according to multiple news reports.

Greta Marie Otteson, 33, and 36-year-old Arno Quinton Els had been staying at the Hoi An Silverbell villa in Hội An before staff found their bodies in separate rooms when they came to clean the property on Thursday, Dec. 26, according to U.K. newspaperThe Times.

Otteson was in her bed in room 101 and her fiancé was discovered in room 201, according to the outlet.

Their bodies were found at approximately 11:18 a.m. local time, bothVietnam NewsandThe Guardianreported. Several empty alcohol bottles were found at the scene, per Vietnam News.

“There were no signs of ransacking at the scene. The victims’ belongings and phones were untouched,”The Timesreported, citing a provincial police spokesman.

The Hoi An Silverbell villa did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Quảng Nam Provincial police confirmed an investigation was underway following the death of the couple, who were said to have “registered for long-term temporary residence” at the villa starting from July 4, 2024, according to Vietnam News.

The outlet reported that “initial findings showed no signs of scratches or external force on the bodies.”

According to Otteson’sFacebookprofile, she was the founder and social media manager of a company called Not Sorry Socials, while Els had jobs including as a stand-up comedian, per hisFacebookpage.

In a video posted on the Red Eye StudiosYouTubepage in December, the couple — who had met in the Middle East before moving to Vietnam, Els said — spoke about their engagement as they prepared to surprise family and friends with the news.

“We’re just two people from opposite ends of the world, living in Asia, doing it together,” Els said in the video, “which is quite precious.”
