Woman Picks Baby Name That Her Sister Has Had 'Dibs' on for Years: 'Am I Just Being a Bratty, Selfish Little Sister?'

A woman who will soon give birth to her first child says she’s hoping to use a name that her sister has had “dibs” on since they were children.

“It is actually my mother’s middle name and since my sister and I were little, probably 8 or so, she has called dibs on this name for her future daughter,” she continues. “We have argued about it for years and I how I didn’t think it was fair that she could call dibs on a name when neither of us were married or pregnant yet.”

Now, 20 years later, the woman is the first of the sisters to get pregnant — and she wants to use the name.

Writing that she is “worried it will cause a genuine riff in the family,” the woman adds that she recently asked her sister “if she would seriously be mad if I used the name for one of our kids and her response was essentially yes and that she would be naming one of her kids that name no matter what.”

“She is nowhere near an engagement, marriage or even starting a family, so part of me feels like this is ridiculous and I should just use the name if we love it this much, but am I just being a bratty, selfish little sister?” the woman writes.

Other Reddit users are chiming in, with one writing: “Is your love of this name more important to you than your relationship with your sister? Those are apparently the stakes here. Your sister apparently feels very strongly that she wants to name her kid this name, has felt this way for a very long time, and would be extremely upset if you also named your kid this name.”

Adds another: “Your sister cant demand dibs on a name, but it sounds more like you are trying to stick it to your sister. You have 3 names you guys picked, is this really the hill you want to die on? She has loved and wanted the name since she was a kid. Let her have it, geez.”
