According to a press release from theVolusia Sheriff’s Office, a 71-year-old woman from New York was sunbathing in a beach chair near her car near the Silver Beach Avenue beach ramp just before 3 p.m. local time on Wednesday, Feb. 5, while she and her husband were visiting Daytona Beach.

As the tourist was sitting in her chair, the elderly driver from DeLeon Springs — located about 25 miles away from Daytona Beach — pulled her Chevrolet Colorado out of her parking spot. She made “an immediate right turn toward the beach exit, did not see the woman in her chair, and struck her with the truck’s right rear tire, which thenran over her head,” the Sheriff’s Office said.

“Hurry up! She ran over her head!” the woman’s husband can be heard saying.

“You alright?” he asks his wife, who replies: “No.”

“She’s talking but she’s not alright,” the man then tells the 911 operator.

“These are the initial details gathered during the early stages of the crash investigation, which is active and continuing,” the Sheriff’s Office added.

According to the city ofDaytona Beach, so-called “beach driving” is allowed on Silver Beach, making it one of the few beaches in the U.S. where visitors can drive directly onto the sand.

Drivers who don’t live in Volusia County can pay a $30 daily fee and drive along designated areas of the white-sand beach, tide permitting. Speed limits are often 10 miles per hour.
