A woman seeks advice from the Reddit community after a family vacation in Hawaii turned into a heated debate over swimwear between the poster and her mother-in-law.
“I have a pretty average body type and have been wearing bikinis all my life,” the 35-year-old woman explains in the since-deletedReddit post. “The ones I got for this trip were pretty standard ones with good coverage. Think about a triangle bra type top and a cheeky bikini briefs bottom.”
The trouble began when the mother-in-law confronted the woman after a day at the beach. According to the poster, the woman pulled her aside and criticized her swimwear choice, calling it “disrespectful and disgusting” for a family vacation that included children and other male relatives.

While the woman’s husband supported her right to wear what she wanted, he suggested buying a few one-piece swimsuits “just to keep the peace.” However, this compromise didn’t sit well with the wife.

In an update to her post, the woman reveals she confided in her sister-in-law about the incident. “There is nothing wrong with that bikini,” the sister-in-law reportedly stated, adding that she opted for a one-piece over her feelings about her own postpartum body.

The woman states she will continue to wear her swimsuit but will only alter the outfit with a cover-up. However, if the issue continues, she will have another conversation with her mother-in-law.
Another stated: “One of the problems with him wanting you to buy a one piece to keep the peace is it sets a precedent.”
