Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez Set to Attend BAFTA Awards Without Costar Karla Sofía Gascón After Backlash

The Spanish actress, 52, previously skipped theCritics Choice Awardsin Los Angeles on Feb. 7 after reports noted shewould not attendupcoming awards ceremonies in the wake of controversies that erupted over her past offensive social media posts.

Emilia Pérezenters the BAFTA Awards with 11 nominations total. Gascón is nominated for leading actress at the BAFTAs, while both Saldaña, 46, and Gomez, 32, are up for best supporting actress.

Gascón previouslyapologizedfor herresurfaced social media postson Feb. 6, vowing silence after making several statements and giving atearful interview.

Emilia Pérez’s director Jacques Audiard said the actress was taking “a self-destructive approach” during an interview with Deadline published Feb. 5.

“Why is she harming herself? … She’s talking about herself as a victim, which is surprising,” said Audiard, who is also nominated and expected to attend the BAFTA Awards. “It’s as if she thought that words don’t hurt.

Gascón made history at the Oscars as thefirst openly transgender performernominated for Best Actress. She also earned nominations at this year’sGolden Globes, Critics Choice Awards andScreen Actors Guild Awards. Gascón has yet to win at any major awards show; Saldaña, meanwhile,won the Critics Choice Awardon Feb. 7 andpicked up a Golden Globe Awardin January as well.

Emilia Pérez, a Netflix musical-thriller about a Mexican drug kingpin transitioning into a woman, led the2025 Oscar nominationstally on Jan. 23 with 13 nods, including Best Picture. The movie took home three Critics Choice Awards total on Feb. 7, including the award for best foreign language film and best song for “El Mal,” whichrecognized Gascón and Saldaña among the award’s winners.

David Tennantis hosting this year’s EE BAFTA Film Awards for the second year in a row, on Sunday, Feb. 16, at Royal Festival Hall in London.
